What Should I Eat Before Donating Plasma?

Haema only uses plasma from healthy donors to produce medicines that save lives and improve quality of life. Maintaining good health and proper nutrition can make plasma donation easier and more efficient. Here’s a guide on what to eat before donating plasma, as well as tips to stay healthy before and after your donation.

What Can I Eat Before Plasma Donation?

What Should I Avoid Before Donating Plasma?

Certain foods and drinks can affect plasma quality or make the donation process more difficult. Since Haema uses only the highest quality plasma for life-saving medicines, it’s important to choose your pre-donation meals carefully. Avoid:

  1. Fatty and high-cholesterol foods: Pastries, fast food, bacon, or other high-fat foods can make plasma cloudy, affecting its usability.
  2. Alcohol: Avoid alcohol at least 12–24 hours before donation, as it dehydrates the body and affects blood composition.
  3. Coffee and black tea: Caffeine can interfere with iron absorption, which may affect your hemoglobin levels.
  4. Dairy products: Milk and dairy can also slow iron absorption, so avoid them in the hours before donation.
  5. Sugary foods: Excess sugar can cause unstable blood sugar levels, leading to dizziness or fainting.

Instead, choose light, healthy meals to prepare your body for donation. Additionally:

  • Do not smoke within one hour of donation.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise in the hour before donating.

What Should I Eat Before Donating Plasma?

Proper nutrition before donation is key to a successful and comfortable donation. Good nutrition and hydration improve plasma quality and help you feel your best during the process. Recommended foods and drinks include:

  1. Iron-rich foods:
    • Meats: calf liver, liver pâté, blood sausage
    • Fish: salmon, cod, pike-perch
    • Legumes: lentils, chickpeas
Pair iron-rich foods with vitamin C (e.g., peppers, citrus fruits) to improve absorption.
  2. Lean proteins: Chicken, turkey, eggs, tofu, or legumes help maintain protein levels in your plasma.
  3. Whole grains: Oatmeal, brown rice, and whole-grain bread provide slow-release energy to stabilize blood sugar levels.
  4. Vegetables and fruits: Fresh vegetables like spinach, carrots, or broccoli, and fruits such as bananas and oranges support your immune system.
  5. Hydration: Drink 2.5–3 liters of fluids the day before, and at least 1.5–2 liters on donation day. Water, unsweetened tea, and diluted fruit juices are ideal.
  6. Healthy fats in moderation: Avocado, nuts, or olive oil are beneficial but should be consumed in small amounts to avoid overloading your body.

Extra tip: 1–2 hours before donation, have a light meal, such as a sandwich or yogurt with fruit.
Get a good night’s sleep and arrive well-rested.

After Plasma Donation

  • Drink plenty of water to replace lost fluids.
  • Eat a healthy meal within two hours of donation.
  • Avoid smoking for at least 30 minutes after donation.
  • Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity for at least 24 hours.

Healthy Nutrition Guidelines

  • Iron-rich foods: Maintain optimal hemoglobin levels.
  • High-protein foods: Maintain proper total protein content.
  • Low-fat foods

Hemoglobin Levels

Before each donation, your hemoglobin (Hb) level is checked:

  • Men: at least 8.4 mmol/L
  • Women: at least 7.8 mmol/L for blood donation and 7.5 mmol/L for plasma donation

Healthy nutrition helps maintain stable Hb levels. The body cannot produce iron on its own, and only 10–15% of dietary iron is absorbed. Therefore, iron-rich nutrition is essential for successful donation.

Meat is the best source of iron: More than 20% of iron from meat is absorbed, compared to only about 5% from plants.

Coffee, black tea, and dairy products reduce iron absorption. For quick iron supplementation, iron tablets can be used: take one tablet daily on an empty stomach (one hour before meals or two hours after) with plenty of fluids. Tablets allow higher iron absorption than diet alone. The most effective approach combines iron-rich foods with occasional supplementation.

Recommended Iron-Rich Foods

Food Tips
Meat Calf liver, blood sausage, liver pâté – pair with vitamin C (fruit juice, peppers)
Grains Soy flour, amaranth, oatmeal
Fish Salmon, pike-perch, cod
Legumes & Vegetables Lentils, chickpeas, mushrooms

Eat healthily and prepare your body for plasma donation.

Plasma

Plasma is a source of life-saving proteins used to produce specialized, irreplaceable medicines. Because these proteins cannot be artificially reproduced, plasma donations are essential for people with certain diseases. Become an everyday hero—donate plasma and save lives!

Vérplazma

A vérplazma életmentő fehérjék forrása, amelyekből speciális, pótolhatatlan gyógyszereket állítanak elő. Mivel ezek a fehérjék mesterségesen nem reprodukálhatók, a plazmaadományok nélkülözhetetlenek azon emberek számára, akik ilyen betegségben szenvednek. Váljon Ön is hétköznapi hőssé, adjon plazmát!
